Error code 4-1
Appliance Dishwasher
Quick answer

The water temperature sensor is sending a value the control cannot accept.

Model compatibility: Viking reuses codes across series and model years, so 4-1 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Plain language

What this code means

The temperature sensor reads out of range because of loose wires, a bad sensor or a bad control board.

When the panel flashes four times on Pots/Pans and once on Normal Wash, that is 4-1. The value arriving from the water temperature sensor lies outside what the control will accept.

Causes the manuals list

  • The wires running to the temperature sensor have come loose.
  • The temperature sensor itself is defective.
  • The main control board is defective.

A sensor that has lost its connection looks like an open circuit to the control, and an open circuit falls well beyond any real water temperature. Loose wiring is the first item in the list.

About the sensor

Viking mounts it in the sump. It is an NTC sensor, so its resistance drops as the water gets hotter. The VDB451 manual puts it near 47K ohms at an ambient 77 degrees F, a figure the VDB200 manual also hands to the technician as the number to check. The sensor reads the water temperature throughout the wash.

On the 200 Series, per the VDB451 manual, the same sensor serves as the water input sensor too, and it picks up the temperature change while the tub fills.

What to do

The sensor unplugs from a two-wire connector and twists out of the sump assembly. Even so, the manual classes the job as service work, because reaching it means opening up the dishwasher, with the power cut first. Until it is looked at, skip further cycles while 4-1 is displayed.

Codes to compare

  • 4-2: the wash heater, a circuit that depends on this sensor
  • 2-2: a fill problem, since this sensor can double as the water input sensor
