Code 1-3: two circuit boards in the dishwasher have lost contact.
Model compatibility: Viking reuses codes across series and model years, so 1-3 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
The main control cannot communicate with the motor control on Viking's variable-speed wash motor.
The fault in one paragraph
Dishwashers from Viking that have a variable-speed wash motor split the work between two boards. The main control issues commands, and a separate motor control carries them out. When they stop exchanging information, 1-3 appears: Pots/Pans flashes one time and Normal Wash three times.
The manual’s three candidates
Viking’s wording for this entry is “motor control comms error.” Only three possibilities are given:
wires that have come loose between the motor controller and the control board,
a motor control that has failed,
a control board that has failed.
Only the VDB451/FDB451 and the VDB325/VDB450 manuals include 1-3. It is absent from the VDB200 and the FDB301 group.
What to do and what to skip
The link is wired inside the cabinet, so getting to it means taking panels off a machine fed with mains power. No manual offers a reset or an owner check for this code. Tell the technician if the unit was pulled out and pushed back, or if work happened nearby, because loose connections top the list.
Switch the breaker off for a minute and restore it. An immediate return of 1-3 shows a persistent fault in the wiring or boards.
Codes in the same circuit area
1-2 concerns a motor failure the motor control reports.
3-5 concerns low control voltage at the motor control.
3-1 is a different link: the control panel to the main control.
