Abnormal current detected on the wash heater circuit.
Model compatibility: Viking reuses codes across series and model years, so 4-2 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
Wash heater current sense is out of range.
4-2 on a Viking dishwasher means the control sees the current on the wash heater circuit outside the expected range. That heater is what warms the water circulating through the machine.
The heater, per the manual
Type: flow-through, sitting in the water path from the sump to the circulation pump.
Ratings: 120 volts, 10 amps, 1200 watts.
Expected resistance: about 12 ohms from the gray wire to neutral.
Timing: diagnostic mode fires it only after the motor check, sixteen seconds following motor start.
For the VDB200 manual the action line is brief: inspect the element’s wiring and look for 12 ohms.
Four possible causes
Wires disconnected between the main control and the wash heater.
A faulty wash heater.
A faulty main control.
A faulty temperature sensor. It is unexpected to find a sensor listed under a heater code, but the manual does.
In the tables 4-2 carries the service-cycle marking. Should a technician read zero ohms across the heater, the instruction is to inspect the wiring, and swap the heater only if the wiring proves sound.
For the owner
Viking publishes nothing an owner can do about it. Never let the element run dry; the pump flow code 3-2 is there so the heater stays off whenever the water is still. Both 3-2 and 4-2 on the display? Report the pair.

Important safety warning. Do not attempt repairs involving electrical components, gas, water lines, refrigerant or sealed systems. Unplug the appliance if it is safe to reach the outlet, and leave internal diagnostics to a qualified technician.
