Dry heater current code that one manual marks not applicable on the 451.
Model compatibility: Viking reuses codes across series and model years, so 5-3 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

What this code means
Dry heater current sense is out of range; the VDB451 manual lists it as N/A on the 451.
Of the Viking dishwasher codes, 5-3 is the one with a disclaimer attached. In the VDB451/FDB451 manual its row describes a dry heater error and then adds “N/A on 451 model”.
Manual by manual
VDB451 / FDB451: described as a dry heater error with out-of-range current sense, then marked not applicable to the 451. Elsewhere that manual says the drying system contains no heater element.
VDB325 / VDB450: same description plus a “450 only” remark.
FDB301 group and VDB200: absent.
The files reviewed say nothing on how a dry heater is built or tested; for that reason no resistance value or access procedure is offered.
Reading it for your model
Owners of a 451 are told the code does not apply. For other models the table repeats the usual current-sense trio: a loose or disconnected wire between control and dry heater, a failed dry heater, or a failed main control.
The documents leave open whether this code, on one specific machine, reflects a genuine drying fault or a control reporting a circuit that machine does not have. Because of that doubt, a technician who has the model number is the sensible next contact.
Meanwhile
If the dishwasher misbehaves, shut off its breaker, and take note of whether the dishes come out damp. Viking’s troubleshooting guide names rinse aid, loading, water temperature and the wash heater as the places to look for that.

Important safety warning. Do not attempt repairs involving electrical components, gas, water lines, refrigerant or sealed systems. Unplug the appliance if it is safe to reach the outlet, and leave internal diagnostics to a qualified technician.
