Model compatibility: Viking reuses codes across series and model years, so 5-2 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
Blower current sense is out of range.
The control has found abnormal current on the blower circuit: that is 5-2. The blower is the small fan at the tail end of Viking’s drying system.
Causes in the manuals
A wiring disconnection between main control and blower
A failed blower
A failed main control
Both the VDB451/FDB451 and the VDB325/VDB450 manuals print this list; the VDB325/VDB450 table adds “450 only” alongside 5-2.
Drying on the VDB451
No heating element is used for drying here, and the VDB451 manual states that outright. Air from the cabinet dries the load while the blower keeps it moving. When the last stage is over, the blower extracts the moist, warm air from the tub with the vent wax motor energized, and the front kickplate grill is the exit.
Timing in the service cycle
Toward the end of the service cycle on the VDB451, once the final drain is done, the blower and the vent wax motor are powered together for ten seconds. The blower circuit gets tested in that window, so if 5-2 is raised there, suspicion falls on the blower or the wiring to it.
Damp dishes
What shows up on the dishes is not described in the manuals. Wet dishes have unrelated explanations in Viking’s troubleshooting guide, namely rinse aid, loading, water temperature and the heater, so the wet dishes and the code should be read independently of each other.
Owner steps
Viking gives owners nothing to check for 5-2. The blower and its connectors are inside the machine, so a code that repeats means someone needs to come out.
Neighbouring codes
5-1: the vent, which operates together with the blower
5-3: dry heater listing sitting next to this one in the table
Important safety warning. Do not attempt repairs involving electrical components, gas, water lines, refrigerant or sealed systems. Unplug the appliance if it is safe to reach the outlet, and leave internal diagnostics to a qualified technician.
