Error code 1-5
Appliance Dishwasher
Quick answer

The 1-5 flash tells you the tub was not empty after draining.

Model compatibility: Viking reuses codes across series and model years, so 1-5 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Plain language

What this code means

Code 1-5 is a drain error: the control sees water remaining in the tub once the drain stage ends.

What 1-5 tells you

The flash pattern for this fault is one blink on LED1 and five on LED2. It points at a failed drain: after the machine pumped out, water was still sitting in the tub.

  • On pressure-sensor models, the sensor signal never dropped to the level that means empty.
  • On models with no pressure sensor, the control’s water-detection routine found water left after the drain.

The VDB451/FDB451 and VDB325/VDB450 service manuals cover the sensor version. The FDB301, RDDB201, RDDB301 and VDB301 manual covers the version without one.

Start with the drain path

Before assuming a failed part, walk through these.

  1. Inspect the drain hose at the back of the unit for a bend or a blockage.
  2. With a garbage disposal in the setup, make sure the plug in the disposal’s dishwasher inlet was knocked out.
  3. Confirm the hose goes up into a high loop, as in the install instructions, and only then heads for the drain.
  4. Make sure the cabinet sits level in both directions.
  5. Pull the filters and look for clogging.

These steps are taken from Viking’s own service tables. In the VDB200 manual the list also includes looking at the disposer for a plug and checking the drain pump for anything stuck in it.

Parts the manuals name next

  • Sensor models: the drain pump, the pressure sensor and the control board.
  • Models without a sensor: the drain pump, the wash pump and the control board.

For the VDB451, the manual gives the drain pump a resistance of about 15.1 ohms (a meter reading) and mentions that the drain motor can be run from diagnostic mode. All of that is technician work. For your own safety, shut off the breaker before reaching into the sump to pull filters.

Codes that sit close to 1-5

  • 3-3 covers the electrical side of the drain pump rather than the water route.
  • 2-5 is the reverse situation, with water leaving too quickly.
  • 2-3 is a low sump level reading, and it is another place the high loop comes up.
