The main control or user interface found a failure on one of its boards.
Model compatibility: Viking reuses codes across series and model years, so 5-5 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
The main control or user interface detects a board-level failure.
Five blinks, then five more: 5-5. The dishwasher is reporting on itself, since its main control or user interface has picked up a failure on a board.
The suspects
Main control
User interface
Nothing else is listed in the VDB451 and VDB325/VDB450 manuals, and there the code carries no mark in the service-cycle column. In the FDB301 group manual it is missing altogether.
Reset, then decide
One reset appears, in the VDB200 manual alone: a four-second press on Start. Should 5-5 come back afterwards, that manual says the controls get replaced. Nothing else in the documents is within an owner’s reach. Holding Start for four seconds is also how the general operating instructions cancel a chosen program, so the keypress is nothing new.
The manual’s approach is to reset one time; when the code returns, the controls are the suspects. A recent power cut during a cycle is worth mentioning, because the tables list an AC power loss pattern of its own, which the VDB451 table says is cleared by three seconds on Start.
Why the controls are the answer
Sensors, motors and hoses are what most Viking codes implicate. Here the trouble lies in the electronics themselves, namely the control board or the interface that forwards your selections. That explains why a failed reset leads directly to replacing the controls in the manual, without any cleaning or adjustment between.
Important safety warning. Do not attempt repairs involving electrical components, gas, water lines, refrigerant or sealed systems. Unplug the appliance if it is safe to reach the outlet, and leave internal diagnostics to a qualified technician.
