The diverter did not confirm it reached its position, so the control timed out.
Model compatibility: Viking reuses codes across series and model years, so 1-4 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
The main control activates the diverter but gets no feedback that the correct position has been reached.
What a diverter timeout means
A motorized diverter sends wash water to the upper arm, the lower arm or both. 1-4 (one flash Pots/Pans, four flashes Normal Wash) means the diverter never confirmed it had moved where it was told.
How the position is known
Each cycle begins with the board moving the diverter to home.
A monitoring switch inside it returns 120 volts to the board.
The length of time that switch stays closed tells the board the position.
If no signal for the commanded position arrives, the board times out and shows the code.
What the manuals list
Disconnected wires between the control board and diverter.
Defective diverter.
Defective control board.
The VDB451 manual gives a test: from its terminal to neutral the diverter motor should show about 2.7K ohms, and if the wiring is good but the value is off, the diverter gets replaced. The VDB200 manual just says to verify resistance and wiring.
Owner limits
The diverter is mounted on the sump, and testing it takes a meter, with some readings done while the unit is powered. After a minute with the power off, one more cycle is reasonable. If 1-4 returns, test the diverter, wiring and board instead of repeating cycles.
1-3: the control loses contact with a component here too.
