F2 on a Viking gas wall oven signals over temperature, with three parts for a technician to check.
Model compatibility: Viking reuses codes across series and model years, so F2 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
Oven over temperature; the service manual says to check the sensor wiring, the sensor and the temperature limiter.
The code
Viking’s VGDO271 gas oven uses F2 for a high oven temperature. Its ERC (electronic range control) sounds rapid short beeps for upward of 16 seconds and puts the code on the display.
What the manual lists
Sensor wiring: the harness carrying the sensor signal to the ERC.
Sensor: the temperature probe in the oven cavity.
Temperature limiter: the safety part guarding against excess heat.
Two pages of the manual, failure codes and component testing, give this identical trio and no other cause.
Sensor resistance
As the manual describes it, the sensor is a resistance element feeding the ERC: near 1100 ohms at 75F, and 1656 ohms by 350F. A room-temperature figure well above that sends the technician to test the sensor apart from the harness. A meter and a dead circuit are required, so owners should not attempt it.
What to do first
Write the code down as it appears.
Touch OFF/CANCEL, or cut power to the range. That clears certain F-codes.
A second F2 means no more cooking; leave the power off.
Related
F3 and F4 concern this sensor circuit when it reads open or shorted.
F09 is the runaway temperature code on EOC4 ovens.
In brief
F2 is oven over temperature. The three items in the manual are the sensor wiring, the sensor and the temperature limiter, and the tests that go with them are for a technician working with a meter and the power off.
