F4 is a shorted oven sensor or sensor circuit on a Viking gas wall oven.
Model compatibility: Viking reuses codes across series and model years, so F4 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
A shorted oven sensor or sensor circuit; the manual says to check sensor resistance and wiring.
The fault
A shorted temperature sensor circuit on a VGDO271 gas wall oven displays F4. The self-diagnostic list describes it as a temperature sensor malfunction, as it does F3.
F3 and F4 side by side
F3 is an open circuit and F4 is a shorted one.
For both, the manual sends the technician to the sensor’s resistance and its wiring.
The technician’s test
Power is disconnected first. Then the harness plug comes off the ERC and an ohmmeter goes across it. The manual gives the expected resistance at four temperatures: 1082 ohms at 75F, 1656 at 350F, 2056 at 550F, 2686 at 880F. A reading well outside those implicates the sensor or the harness. Taking the sensor out and testing it alone shows which one it is.
What owners can do
Note the code, and stop cooking for as long as the display or beeping continues.
Try OFF/CANCEL or shut the breaker off. According to the manual, certain F-codes clear.
When F4 returns, keep the power off and call a servicer.
F2 is over temperature, and also names the sensor wiring.
In brief
F4 is a shorted oven sensor or sensor circuit. The manual names sensor resistance and wiring as the checks, and an owner’s part is limited to recording the code and trying OFF/CANCEL or a power disconnect.
