SH on a thermistor test means the sensor circuit reads shorted.
Model compatibility: Viking reuses codes across series and model years, so SH may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
In service test mode, SH on thermistor tests 141, 142, 144 and 145 means the thermistor reads shorted.
SH, a diagnostic letter pair
SH is a diagnostics reading on Viking VCFF and DDFF136D French door refrigerators. Where a temperature would be, it indicates a shorted thermistor. You will not see it in daily use.
Tests where it may appear
141: fresh food thermistor
142: freezer thermistor
144: ambient thermistor, which measures the temperature outside the unit
145: ice maker box thermistor
A number is the usual result, such as 41 for fresh food or 28 for the freezer in the sheet’s samples. A failed sensor circuit swaps it for SH or OP.
Reading the result
Resistance in a thermistor varies with temperature; if the circuit is shorted the control has no temperature to give and prints SH. The sheet names the state and no repair. Either button steps through the tests, and SH only means something next to the test number shown on the display’s left.
Entering and leaving
Hold WATER and UR, then wait for SE. To leave, cycle the refrigerator door or press the door alarm for 3 seconds. Opening the mode does not mean something needs fixing.
Details to pass along
The test number that displayed SH.
Whether the fresh food or freezer compartment has been off-temperature.

Important safety warning. Do not attempt repairs involving electrical components, gas, water lines, refrigerant or sealed systems. Unplug the appliance if it is safe to reach the outlet, and leave internal diagnostics to a qualified technician.
